About

Hi there, and welcome to Big Apple Travels! My name is Emily; I’m 20 years old and from the small town of Woodend, just north of Melbourne, Australia. Last year, I moved out of home to the big city, and am studying Media and Communications at The University of Melbourne. I have always loved writing, and it has been a lifelong dream of mine to become a successful writer – whether it be an author, travel writer, freelance journalist, or blogger. But after dreaming of moving to Melbourne for quite some time, the magic started to wear off once the reality of paying bills and general adulting settled in. I soon yearned to pursue an even bigger dream of mine; to travel to, and live in, New York City. Which brings us here.

Big Apple Travels

Although yes, my initial fascination with NYC was due to the glamorous Upper East Side lifestyle portrayed in Gossip Girl, or by watching a little too much Friends and How I Met Your mother.

But after researching, I realised how much opportunity there was in NYC as a writer. So after months of reading more about the Big Apple, and applying for various internships, I landed myself a position at The Spark Group as a creative writing intern for their blog, Ignite.

Whilst I will be writing blog posts for Ignite on various topics surrounding NYC culture, I thought to also create my own blog, one in which I can write about my explorations in NYC in my free time.

I hope you’ll enjoy reading of my adventures as I pursue my lifelong dream, and learn a ‘lil bit about this great city alongside me! I think a big part of travelling and living away from home, especially overseas, is that you can embrace a completely new culture, meet new people, and of course, discover parts of yourself that you may not have otherwise discovered. As a young writer, there are various parts to myself that I wish to unlock, to discover, and I think that living in New York might just do this for me.

As Pico Iyer states in Why we Travel, “…in traveling to a truly foreign place, we inevitably travel to moods and states of mind and hidden inward passages that we’d otherwise seldom have cause to visit”. I want to visit these inward passages, and discover these states of minds. I want to travel.
